In late 2004, she volunteered to fill an open billet in a unit deploying to Al Asad Airbase in Iraq. On August 27, 2005, an indirect fire rocket impacted the base, and she suffered a shrapnel wound to the cheek. She would later learn that the shrapnel was just millimeters away from her maxillary artery, the main artery in the face. Though her doctor wanted to send her home, she insisted on returning to her unit. As a result of her shrapnel wound, she became the first female Gunnery Sergeant to be awarded the Purple Heart.</div> </div> <div> <div>LOC Contributor Names</div> <div>Rose Marie Grosshans Noël, Veterans History Project</div> </div> <div> <div>LOC Created/Published</div> <div>March 20 ????</div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Creators</div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/707" hreflang="en">Rose Marie Grosshans Noël</a></div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Source Day</div> <div>20</div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Source Month</div> <div>March</div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Source Year</div> <div>2012</div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Format</div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">Audio</a></div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Type of Source</div> <div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/19" hreflang="en">Oral history</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Theme Topic</div> <div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/390" hreflang="en">Citizenship - Civic Duties</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Internal Notes</div> <div>No year is available for oral history interview- put 2012 because it occurred after she retired in 2011.</div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Index Number</div> <div>377</div> </div> <div>Off</div> <div> <div>EEC Theme</div> <div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/177" hreflang="en">Citizenship</a></div> </div> </div> <div> <div>EEC Topics</div> <div> <div><a href="/taxonomy/term/207" hreflang="en">Civic Duties</a></div> </div> </div> Tue, 03 Oct 2017 18:16:31 +0000 scollini 503 at https://eagleeyecitizen.org Interview with Pearle W. That allowed him to serve in the Army as an officer, but his rank didn&#039;t shield him from experiencing discrimination; he and his fellow black officers were segregated from the white officers. One benefit of his serving in Italy was to further his education in architecture. He was wounded while driving a jeep in December 1944, and a subsequent bout with tonsillitis shortened his service in the field. Lacking the points to go home when the war ended, Madison pulled various Occupations duties until May 1946. Back home in Cleveland, he experienced outright prejudice when trying to further his education in architecture, but he persevered and eventually opened a minority-based firm, the first in Ohio.</div> </div> <div> <div>LOC Contributor Names</div> <div>Robert P.
