Interest groups are organizations whose members are united in a common goal to influence public policy. Individuals may join interest groups and donate time or money to advance their cause. In return, interest groups often have leadership who lobby, or try to persuade, legislators on behalf of the group. These interests may range from professional organizations (e.g., the American Medical Association), to public (e.g., the environment) or economic interests (e.g., labor unions).
