Spoiler alert! Although no third party candidate has ever won a presidential election, third parties play an important role in the political process. When there is widespread distrust of the two major political parties, the third party candidate might draw votes away from either party. In other instances, a third party might be successful in promoting a single issue - as in the passage of the 18th amendment (prohibition).
