Constitution - Slavery

When Congress ratified the Constitution in 1789, it recognized slavery as legal and binding. With the end of the Civil War in 1865, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the 14th Amendment extended citizenship to the former slaves, and the 15th Amendment provided legal protection for voting rights.
