The right to vote was expanded by constitutional amendments and by legislation. The constitutional changes included the following amendments: (1) the 14th Amendment (1868) prohibited states from denying to any person with their jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws, (2) the 15th Amendment (1870) prohibited states from denying the right to vote on the basis of race, (3)the 17th Amendment (1913) provided for direct election of Senators, (4) the 19th Amendment (1920) gave women the right to vote, (5) the 24th Amendment (1964) eliminated the Poll Tax, (6) and the 26th Amendment (1971) lowered the voting age to 18.
