Citizenship - Slavery

Slavery prevented the full rights of citizenship for millions of enslaved African Americans until the U.S. Constitution was amended following the Civil War. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments abolished slavery, ensured those born in the United States and recently freed slaves were granted citizenship, and gave African-American men the right to vote.
